“Life as a therapist is a life of service in which we daily transcend our personal wishes and turn our gaze toward the needs and growth of the other. We take pleasure not only in the growth of our patient but also in the ripple effect—the salutary influence our patients have upon those whom they touch in life.”
— Irvin D. Yalom
There’s something you should know about me…
My name is Dr. James Bass, and this is my dream job. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in Family Systems, Attachment, and Relational Psychodynamic therapies to help the people of Texas.
This is a family run business, supported by my incredible wife and three kids who are just as excited as I am that I get to do this work.
I enjoy attuning to my patients, listening to their stories, and creating a treatment plan that addresses the real issues. My style is engaging, with space for you to experience emotions and process the events of the week, balanced with shared insight and questions as we progress. I want my patients to feel understood in a way they likely have never experienced before.
Texas will always be my home. I was born and raised in Dallas TX, attended college and graduate school in Abilene TX, have extensive experience in church ministry in the US and abroad as a missionary, and have been working as a therapist in the DFW metroplex since 2017.
My approach
Specialties
I enjoy working with clients from all different backgrounds. I specialize in therapy with individuals, couples and families struggling with conflict, communication, grief, trauma, anxiety, identity, depression, spirituality, addiction, stress and burnout.
As a result of my training and previous work experiences, I also care for pastors and their families, as well as providing therapy for other therapists.
Theoretical approach
My approach to therapy is a blend of how I have been shaped in my doctoral and masters level training, as well as what has influenced me most in my personal life and the lives of my patients.
This approach is a foundation in Family systems therapy, which values the context we are born into, relational patterns we learn, and how we can heal within the context of relationship. Attachment science serves as a foundational element for understanding development as well as how personalities are formed. From this foundation I also rely on aspects of Relational Psychodynamic and depth therapy, which focuses on the meaning of life, our underlying motivations and drives, and personality we take on to adapt to the world inside of and around us.
Education
I value becoming the best therapist I can at caring for my patients. I am participating weekly in consultation groups, attending trainings and conferences, and diving into research to better equip me to successfully help you.
In 2026 I completed my Doctorate of Professional Counseling from the Texas Institute of Professional Psychology through Kairos University. Previously I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University in Texas. I am licensed in the state of Texas as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
